The Training That Level 3 First Aid Attendants Receive

by Roberto Morales

Depending on the number of workers, the industry hazard rating, and the distance from medical aid, a Canadian workplace requires that employees undergo a specific level of training. Level 3 first aid is the highest level of first aid training. It's important to know what a level 3 first aid attendant will be taught before they are fully certified.

Common Topics Covered in Level Three First Aid Courses

A student learning about level 3 first aid will learn about basic physical anatomy and physiology. To make sure that the patient receives adequate care, a level 3 first aid attendant must document the injuries that the patient has suffered.

A level 3 first aid attendant will learn how to treat common workplace injuries. For example, the attendant might need to render aid quickly to an employee who has fallen or who is experiencing cardiac arrest. The patient might go into shock due to blood loss and may need the appropriate emergency treatment.

Moving the patient can be difficult and can potentially cause the patient to become more injured. The attendant will be able to make educated decisions regarding patient transport, will be able to take care of the patient while they are being transported, and will also know how to package the patient. For example, the patient might need oxygen therapy and the attendant must manage this.

Some Injuries Require Emergency Interventions

If an employee has become poisoned, an attendant may be able to take the appropriate action. For example, some poisons are best dealt with by inducing vomiting with activated charcoal. Head injuries and medical emergencies, such as asthma attacks, also need to be addressed quickly by a well-trained attendant.

An attendant needs to identify medical emergencies such as a patient who is having difficulty breathing and how to use suction equipment to open up the airway. They also need to be able to respond to strokes and seizures.

How a Level 3 First Aid Attendant is Evaluated

After taking the course, a student will need to take an exam to become certified and will also need to meet age requirements. These courses are not only focused on first aid but are also designed specifically with high-risk workplaces in mind.

The certificate needs to be renewed periodically by taking the level three first aid certification exam. But those who have the certification will be able to keep your workplace in compliance.
