Family Caregivers: How Do You Care For A Bed-Bound Loved One?

by Roberto Morales

If your elderly parent is bedridden, you may need to perform duties that you may not be accustomed to, such as heavy lifting and turning. However, the stress of lifting, transferring, or even bathing your loved one in bed may take a huge toll on your back and health. If you follow these tips, you can care for your bed-bound loved one without hurting your back.

Use the Right Body Mechanics When Lifting

Certified nursing assistants and other professional caregivers keep their backs healthy by using good biomechanics. Biomechanics describes the way you hold and support your body during heavy lifting and other strenuous activities. Family caregivers may not learn how to lift their loved ones properly. If you use the wrong biomechanics to care for your loved one, you may injure your back, neck, and shoulders.

Always keep your back/spine straight and abdominal, or core, muscles tight when transferring or lifting your loved one to and from the bed. Also, use the strong muscles in your thighs to turn your loved one in bed for their baths and other personal care needs.

If you still struggle to lift, transfer, or care for your loved one in bed, make your duties easier by renting a hospital bed.

Rent a Hospital Bed

Although regular beds can be comfortable for most people, the beds may not be comfortable for patients or their caregivers. Regular beds can be too low or too high to perform your duties properly and safely. A hospital bed may be a better alternative for you and your elderly parent.

Most hospital beds come with features or mechanisms that allow you to adjust their height during personal care, such as bathing and dressing changes. You can also adjust a hospital bed's height to transfer your loved one in and out of bed.

When you get ready to rent a hospital bed, look for one that comes with the features above. Also, choose a bed with lockable wheels. Lockable wheels prevent the bed from moving during patient care.

Your loved one's hospital bed should also come with a remote control system. The system allows you to adjust the bed without leaving your loved one's side. If you can't decide on the right remote control system for your loved one's bed, reach out to a medical equipment and supply company immediately.
