3 Things Your Eye Doctor Can Tell You About Your Health

by Roberto Morales

Your eyes are an important part of who you are. Not only do they give you sight so that you can see the world around you, they are windows into your heart through which you can communicate without saying a word. But did you know that your eyes can also play an important role in diagnosing your overall health? There are a number of health issues that your eye doctor can spot with a routine eye exam. Listed below are a few to consider.

Aneurysm

A cerebral aneurysm is an extremely serious, often fatal, condition if left untreated. An aneurysm, a weak or bulging area in a blood vessel, not only causes problems by putting stress on nerves and surrounding tissue, if it ruptures, it can be deadly. While, unfortunately, an aneurysm may be undetected until it ruptures, a visit to the eye doctor can determine if you have pressure or swelling in your eyes – a potential sign of a cerebral aneurysm. Symptoms that could indicate a brain aneurysm include, but are not limited to:

High blood pressure

Your eyes have a lot to say about your health, including whether or not your blood pressure is out of control. High blood pressure can damage the vessels at the backs of your eyes, a condition which an eye doctor can determine through a routine exam. If left untreated, high blood pressure can cause a host of health problems from heart attacks to aneurysms. Likewise, high blood pressure can contribute to a multitude of eye problems, including glaucoma, which could lead to loss of vision.

Diabetes

Left undiagnosed and untreated, diabetes can lead to eye damage and even blindness. While diabetes is diagnosed with a blood test, your eye doctor may be able to determine if you have the symptoms of undiagnosed diabetes during your eye exam, and therefore be able to recommend any further action required for diagnosis. Diabetes can wreak havoc on your retinas and the blood vessels in your eyes, leading to vessel ruptures and hemorrhages in your eyes.

While there is no need to be alarmed, it is wise to invest in regular eye exams. Likewise, it is vital that you have any sudden or lingering changes in your vision checked by an eye doctor immediately. You could be saving your vision - and keeping the window open to your heart.
