Chiropractic Care For Back Pain In Children Because Of Heavy Backpacks

by Roberto Morales

Visiting the chiropractor has historically been something reserved for adults, but many parents are turning to chiropractic care for their children. One of the most common reasons why parents take their children to a chiropractor is because of some type of back pain resulting from an injury. Carrying a heavy backpack is one cause of lower back injury, strain and pain. Chiropractic care has the potential to help realign a child's spine and ease pain, so speak with your child's pediatrician about a chiropractic referral.

Children and Back Pain Because of Backpacks

The number of children who experience back pain has been increasing in the past decade or so. One reason is because many children are required to haul textbooks back and forth between school and home, and carrying a backpack that weighs a lot can put pressure on the spine, leading to lower back pain. In fact, the lifetime prevalence of lower back pain among school children is between 20 and 51 percent, according to Dr. Anthony L. Rosner, writing for the Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research.

Treatment of Pediatric Lower Back Pain With Chiropractic Care

If you and your child's pediatrician have decided that chiropractic care is appropriate for your child, you can expect that the chiropractor (like those at Airdrie Chiropractic) will conduct a series of gentle exercises. These exercises vary from child to child, depending on the cause and severity of back pain, but are designed to help ease pressure in the lower back, as well as strengthen the lower back to help prevent future pain. A chiropractor will also prescribe exercises that your child can do at home to help improve posture and increase muscle strength, both of which can reduce the risk of future back pain.

Other Tips From Chiropractors

Following the backpack checklist published by the American Chiropractic Association is another treatment plan most chiropractors use with pediatric patients experiencing back pain. Choose a backpack that is no wider or longer than your child's torso and that doesn't hang more than 4 inches below your child's waistline. Purchase a backpack that has wide, padded straps and encourage your child to use both straps when carrying the backpack around. Adjust the backpack straps so the backpack hangs evenly on your child's back. Also opt for a backpack that has several compartments or pockets. This helps distribute items and weight more evenly in the backpack so it hangs straight and is less likely to cause lower back strain.
